With the holiday season rapidly approaching, many families are making plans for end-of-the-year road trips. Whether you’re seeking a change of climate or spending the holidays with extended family, you’ll naturally want to do everything in your power to ensure a safe, smooth, incident-free trip. A good starting point is to take care of your vehicle.

Here’s a quick list of holiday travel tips from the technicians in our service center, including some guidelines to ensure your car is in good working order before you hit the road.

Holiday Travel Tips for Your Vehicle

Check the oil level.

Using your dipstick, make sure you have enough oil in the tank. If you’re a little low, add some new motor oil, ensuring you’re using the oil type specified in your vehicle owner’s manual. And if the oil in the tank is dark and dirty, as opposed to amber-colored, that probably means you should get an oil change before your trip.

Inflate your tires.

Your owner’s manual will also give you the recommended psi for your tires. Use a tire gauge to ensure they are not underinflated, and if they need a bit more air, use an air pump to fill them up. We’d recommend keeping a small tire gauge in your car and monitoring your tire pressure at least once a month.

Make sure you have emergency equipment.

Hopefully, you won’t experience any car trouble on your trip. On the off chance that you do, however, it’s best to be prepared. Be certain that your car is properly stocked with jumper cables, extra motor oil, a flashlight with extra batteries, a spare tire, and other auto maintenance must-haves.

Have it inspected.

The best way to make sure your car is safe and ready for travel is to have it inspected by professional service technicians. When you come to our service center, you can ensure not just that the oil and tires look right, but that the brakes, transmission, and other key systems are functioning at peak capacity. And if there are any issues, our technicians can fix them now, before you head out of town.
