How to Tell When Your Volkswagen Needs an Oil Change

oil change maintenance

By attending to routine maintenance, you can extend the lifespan and enhance the performance of your Volkswagen vehicle. One of the most important forms of routine VW maintenance is the oil change. Your car will need its oil changed at regular intervals. The best way to tell when your car is due for an oil change is to consult the owner’s manual, which will give you a ballpark estimate. Alternatively, you’re welcome to contact our service center to get a recommendation from one of our technicians.

When you get to the place where your car is truly due for an oil change, though, it will let you know. Here are some of the telltale signs that the time for an oil change has drawn nigh.

Signs Your Volkswagen Needs an Oil Change

The dashboard light is illuminated.

On your VW’s dashboard, you should notice a Check Oil light, which will come on when your oil life is getting low. This is a pretty clear sign that you should make an appointment in our service center sooner rather than later.

Your engine oil is dirty.

It’s very easy to use the dipstick to check your engine oil level, which we recommend you do once a month or so. If your dipstick comes up dry, that means you need some engine oil added right away. Also pay attention to whether or not it’s dirty. Clean, healthy engine oil will be amber- or honey-colored in appearance. If your engine oil is dark or visibly full of debris, that’s a good indicator that you’re due for a service appointment.

You hear a grinding or moaning sound coming from your engine.

The important role that oil plays is to lubricate the various components of your engine, preventing them from grinding against each other and generating too much friction. If your engine starts making abrasive noises, that may mean the oil is no longer doing its job, and the time for an oil change is now.
